Intestinal Ultrasound (IUS)

The IBD Centre of BC offers advanced IUS services as part of its comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to inflammatory bowel disease care. IUS is a non-invasive, radiation-free imaging technique that allows real-time assessment of bowel inflammation, disease activity, and treatment response at the point of care.

Our IUS program is led by Drs. Matthew Smyth and Astrid Williams, both of whom have specialized training and expertise in the use of intestinal ultrasound for IBD. Their experience enables high-quality image acquisition, accurate interpretation, and immediate clinical integration during patient visits.

Unlike traditional imaging modalities, IUS does not require radiation exposure, contrast agents, or bowel preparation. This makes it particularly well suited for repeated monitoring over time, including assessment of treatment response, early detection of disease flares, and evaluation of complications such as strictures or abscesses. Because results are available in real time, IUS supports faster clinical decision-making and more personalized care plans.

At the IBD Centre of BC, intestinal ultrasound is seamlessly integrated into routine clinical care for both adult and transitioning adolescent patients. When appropriate, IUS is used alongside other diagnostic tools such as endoscopy, laboratory testing, and cross-sectional imaging to provide a complete and nuanced understanding of disease status.

By offering IUS within the clinic setting, the Centre reduces reliance on hospital-based imaging, shortens wait times, and improves the overall patient experience. This service reflects our commitment to innovative, patient-centered care and to delivering the highest standard of evidence-based IBD management.

FAQ

  • Does IUS require any preparation?

No special preparation is needed. You can eat, drink, and take your medications as usual before the exam. In some cases, you can be scanned after seeing any of our clinicians at the IBD Centre of BC.

  • Is IUS painful or uncomfortable?

IUS is generally painless. A small amount of pressure may be applied to the abdomen during the scan, but most patients find it very well tolerated and much more comfortable than other diagnostic tests. We even use a gel warmer to reduce discomfort.

  • How is IUS different from CT scans or MRI?

Unlike CT scans, intestinal ultrasound does not use radiation, and unlike MRI, it does not require contrast, prolonged scan times, or enclosed spaces. IUS is performed at the point of care, allowing your clinician to review the findings immediately and discuss next steps during the same visit. At the IBD Centre of BC, IUS appointments can often be scheduled the same day, compared with significantly longer wait times that may occur with other imaging services in British Columbia.

  • How can IUS help manage my IBD?

IUS helps monitor disease activity, assess response to treatment, and detect complications early. Because it can be safely repeated over time, it supports personalized treatment decisions and closer, more responsive disease monitoring.

  • Is there a cost for Intestinal Ultrasound (IUS)?

There is no cost to patients for intestinal ultrasound at the IBD Centre of BC. This service is offered free of charge as part of our commitment to accessible, high-quality IBD care. All IUS equipment has been made possible through the generosity of grateful patients and donors who chose to give back and help improve care for others living with IBD.
